 Piazza Armerina is set on a plateau around 700 m above sea level and 35 km from Enna. It is a charming city founded during Norman era rich in History. It features beautiful churches, a Baroque cathedral and a well preserved fortress.
Most visitors come to Piazza Armerina to see the Roman villa and its magnificent mosaics.
The Villa del Casale was built between 330 and 360 AD and features 3500 m2 of mosaics on its floors and some wall paintings.
The remains of another village have been found at 6km south of the villa. These remains include baths, Roman and Byzantine cemeteries and a Paleo Christian church's vestiges.
Not far from Piazza Armerina, Enna is a hilltop city founded by the ancient Sicels. Enna was also populated by the Greeks, conquered by the Arabs and later ruled by the Normans.
